I am not sure had the same problem as all of you with sending mail or not. But here
is how I solved the only two problems I ever had w/ mail/kmail.

1.) Problem: Mailer could not look up my mail servers even though I had entered
them exactly as I had with windows. Sol'n: Enter the full mail server name. You
will most likely have to contact your ISP for this. For example, in windows @home
told me to enter 'mail' for smtp and pop3 server. The full name I needed for linux
was 'mail.sshe1.sk.wave.home.com' .
2.) Problem: Kmail worked fine. One day I could only recieve, not send. It
complained
that I had improper syntax in my To: field (or something like that.) I knew that I
had the info correct. Sol'n: One of the kmail folders was corrupt. So I deleted
the ~/mail folder. This corrected everything. Note: this will empty all of your
mail boxes, nothing else. Filters, settings, and abook will remain. NOte2 - I
probably should have deleted the mail boxes one at a time to see which one was
actually corrupt. Most likely it was the out-box, or sent-mail.

Hope this helps someone.
