I agree exactly. I researched for a month before getting my HP4200c and found that,
while it was not the cheapest ($200) it reputedly
privided the highest quality scans for the price. Unfortunately, I was looking at it
with WIN98 in mind, and not Linux. It really
does nice scans.
Less than a year later, I find that I am using Linux almost all of the time, and my
kids prefer it as well. Had I the opportunity to
do it again, I would know better. I also think that it is immoral for HP to market
Linux boxes and not even provide drivers for all
of the periferals that they market. They could have at least sold it in a box with a
pengiun on the outside, enclosed in a red
circle with a slash through it. Perhaps a message in small print which says "Linux
enthusiasts stay away, we really don't care about
you."
Anyway, with that aside. Yes, there is an "alpha" driver for the HP4200c to use with
SANE. The 4200 is somewhat different from other
models, and so the general HP driver does not work, and the driver is only partially
functional (8 bit scans). Please let me know if
this is the proper strategy to get it working:
1. Uninstall the present sane-gimp1.1, libsane, and xsane-gimp1.1
2. Install the USB patch to kernel source and recompile the kernel (this may not be
necessary, I'm not sure. I think the USB ports
are scanned on startup)
3. Download the latest SANE source and the HP4200C patch. Apply the patch and compile
the SANE program
4. Try it out and then figure out how to get GIMP to access the new version of xsane.
If I'm way off on any of this please let me know.
Thanks,
Glen
