I remember beeing asked somewhere if I want X to be started
automatically
in every Debian install I've done .You might've skipped it or didn't
choose the X task.
If you are thinking a display manager xdm is part of Debian for a long
time and also both gdm and kdm(this oficially only in woody).I still
have bo and hamm on CD's so I may track X and xdm back then for
historical purposes if required.I started actually using Debian with
slink so I don't
remember much about hamm and got bo installed only once but deffinitely
there's a full distro of X in Debian for a long time now.

How did you got that idea anyway ?
If it wasn't obvious maybe you can submit a bug report against the
installation manual or boot floppies(I'm serious here).
