I have managed to get it running. There are several issues.

KDE2 is officially released, no longer beta.

My sources needed cleaning up. rkrusty was not available and since some 60
packages were upgraded to KDE2, it seems that kde is not required.
So, my kde sources list line has become:
deb http://kde.tdyc.com/ potato kde2 contrib
This source line removed 'unavailable' messages and upgraded 60 packages,
excluding kdevelop, which requires some newer libraries than seem to be
available.

Using 'ln Debian kde2' in /etc/gdm/Sessions created the new kde2 line in
gdm, the Storm login manager.
I also removed the link to kde in /etc/gdm/Sessions because selecting kde at
login locked up the system since almost all of the kde packages had been
upgraded to kde2 and the upgrade process did not cover everything.

Thanks for the replies I've had.
Now, if kword would actually read word97 files, kspread would actually read
.xls files and konqueror would actually use Netscape's macromedia plugins,
life would be good.
