Hi

It would've helped to tell where you installed X4
from(woody,/debian.org/~branden..)
Now ,since the XF86Config file from 3.3 doesn't work at all with X4 as
Carl just wrote something is screwy there with your install.See Carl's
article.As for gdm
I just found myslef that pam won't authenticate with gdm unless you
startx as each
user from console then logout.(don't ask why,I have no clue why pam
would refuse to authenticate).Also changing in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
 AllowRoot=1
would help logging in as root.

Ofcourse the best way to see exactly what's going on would be to cat the
files in
/var/log ,like messages,auth.log and the file .xsession-errors in your
home directory and read the latest lines.
