In these situations, don't things work better if you set the jumpers on the 
card to give it a specific IO and IRQ, then tell Linux what they are?  I 
had similar problems with one of those Sound-Card Controlled CD-ROMs under 
Slackware 3.5.  Once I told it which IO/IRQ to use, it was smooth sailing.

Just my $.02...someone else on the list may know better.
