Okay, I figured out my problems with xfree4.0.2. It works just fine.
My problem is with logging in with the graphical gdm login screen.
No matter who I log in as (root, regular user, whatever), it sneezes
then puts me right back at the login screen. It seems like it wants
to continue into X but then it just snaps back to the gdm login
screen.
The only way to escape this is to go into another virtual terminal,
log in, kill gdm, then run startx.
How can I fix this skipping record?
