Hi Frank,
Sorry, I'm just a newbie too. I haven't done a kernal but here is a command
that was used to reinstall the log.
apt-get update
apt-get --reinstall install sysklogd (log file)
When you use this, it will ask for the CD. Hope this gets you in the right
direction.
