The Promise ATA/100 controller on the a7v has been known to cause lockups on some
linux systems using the 2.2.x kernel - whether booting to a drive on that controller
or not. The 2.4 series kernels have support for that controller chipset.
Does your motherboard use the newest B series Via southbridge (ata/100 rather than
ata/66 support) and is your drive an ata/100 beastie? If so, you might be breaking
new ground as that combo is very new - post-dating your kernel.
