Stovers,

To ignite at the bottom a stove intended to be ignited at the top makes its operational combustion PROCESS different from its normal operation, and the NAME of the stove is not to be blamed, even if that name is an acronym for the process, as is the case of stoves with the top-lit updraft process.

Dear Crispin

I learned the TLUD technique 70 year ago from old hunters and foresters, and they had surely learned it from older men or women again and no doubt the Roman needs it for their security. To day it is common to by foresters to crosscut with a chainsaw about 10cm at top of a vertical standing 15x30-60cm log, putting a birch-bark or ad some diesel in the gap, ignite and having a clean mostly smokeless flame. What I did with the Peko Pe 20 years ago was to control the 1st and 2nd air and by that could utilize several different types of fuel like straw bundles vertical, wood-sticks vertical, chopped or chipped wood, pellets, grass weed and paper stamped with a 5cm hole in the middle, Cashew-nut hulls directly, maize-cobs chopped etc. 20 years later the Peko Pe.was tested at Approvechoas the cleanest FIS-ND. At all types of stoves even charcoal stoves the fuel can be lit.on top So there could probably be an O (only) before TLUD as a name of a specific type on stoves. Dr TLUD will be the right man to decide the right name of this type of stoves which are not performing the same if they are ignited from beneath the fuel.

Dear Jeff

I didn't really discover anything! MCC brought them to my attention asking
for an emissions and performance test. They ran their stove their way, I ran
it mine the next day. It has potential and how to achieve it was conveyed to
them in a way they can improve it immediately. It may need a little
refinement for a month or two.

I am bit bemused about the fuss over who invented what. The Romans used TLUD
fires to limit smoke production. Nat and I were discussing it in Washington.
Some things are just worth rediscovering.

Let's get on with more and better stove designs. I met someone in DC who has
a new idea for basic can type stoves that I have not seen before. He has
been doing experiments and has successfully shortened the flames. That will
be of interest to Indian stove makers because they have height issues. I
will get back to you on that.

Regards
Crispin
