Dear Professor Bhattacharya,
Thanks for the document on dryers and for the links to many items
(after the floodwaters recede).
Tom M, will you take these under your wing, or should we seek
alternative outlets?
Professor, Your advice please. In Asia there are numerous studies
completed that do not reach (or do not easily reach) other areas. How
can we obtain that info from India, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, and
many other places? Do you know the people there? Is this something
that you could assist us with while in your retirement? (I am also
retired from employment, so I do understand the limitations, etc.)
One other question. The publications describe items, but do not tell
us of their acceptance and usage. And the publication dates of 2005
mean that 6 or more years of "action and application" are not
reported. We have no idea if there were 5 or 50 or 500 or 5000 or
more of the devices. Can you assist in obtaining that info for
whatever sources, please?
ANYONE ELSE ABLE TO ASSIST WITH SUCH INFORMATION? Do we have readers
in those countries? And who can ask their friends in those locations ?
Thanks,
Paul

Other technology packages and published papers of the Sida project can be
downloaded from www.retsasia.ait.ac.th. The biomass/stove group may be
interested the package on drying, which includes a hybrid drier using solar
energy and bioenergy from a gasifier stove, heat output of which could be
automatically controlled by using a thermostat.
I also coordinated another regional project (Asian Regional Research
Programme in Energy, Environment and Climate, ARRPEEC) funded by Sida in
three phases during 1995-2005. One of the 4 projects of ARRPEEC was on
biomass. Dissemination booklets of ARRPEEC and some of the papers published
can be downloaded from www.arrpeec.ait.ac.th
The websites above is not operational now. These should be up and running in
2-3 weeks after the flood water recedes. Please let me know if there is any
problem.

Thank you. I have received it, and we will hear from Tom Miles about it
being posted or not by him. If he does not post it, I can at my site or
maybe at the BEF site.
A document that size cannot go through the Stoves Listserv, so other
readers who want a copy will soon be able to get it via a website.
I believe that similar documents should or could be made available via some
websites. What other ones are available? Is there a list of titles you
could send?

Dear Professor B.,
Your reply is informative and is the start of some futher actions, I
hope.
Yes, please send to me by attachment the mentioned info about
briquetting.
Please send it also to Tom Miles <[email protected]> who will
determine if it can be places on one of the bioenergylists.org
websites. And I will see about having it placed elsewhere.
We should consider doing similar dissemination of the other
documentation.
I think that one key to the success of this dissemination will be to have
you and others in Asia supplying that documentation (of past, present and
future) to some of us who will undertake to increase access.
Providing access to worthy but lesser-known documentation (mainly on
gasification issues) has been an activity of the Biomass Energy
Foundation
(BEF) for over 25 years, by Tom Reed and now headed by Kathy Nafie.
Perhaps this might be another outlet for the Asian information.
Sincerely,
Paul

Dear Dr. Anderson,
The briquetting and gasifier stove work I mentioned was carried out
under
a
Sida-sponsored project at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The
project involved researchers from 12 national research institutes of six
Asian countries, e.g., Bangladesh, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Nepal, Philippines
and
Vietnam. The findings of the project were disseminated through national
dissemination seminars in these countries; published "Technology
packages"
were distributed widely in the region and are still available for
downloading from the project website. We organized technology transfer
workshops, in which a number of NGOs form the region were invited, on
most
of the technologies developed.
(There is no restriction on distribution of the technology packages.)
Unfortunately, the link of the project is not working due to heavy flood
in
Thailand; AIT appears to be still under 2 m of water. Anyway, I can send
you
the package on briquetting and stoves as an email attachment (1.33 MB)
if
you want; please let me know.
I agree with your opinion regarding lack of information flow, but do not
have any clear idea on how to overcome the problem.
Best regards.

Dear Professor Bhattacharya,
Thank you for your message and you offer of the publications. You and
your
associates have done great work, and having that information more
widely
distributed (or brought to the attention of more of us) would be highly
beneficial.
Right now for Uganda, we have great interest in the
"... information package (including construction details) on biomass
briquetting machines developed in a number of Asian countries..."
How could we best access that information? Has it ever been copied
in
digial format that could be distributed? Are there any distribution
restrictions on any of the materials that you mentioned?
Personal opinion: There is little and insufficient flow of information
between the Asian activities and accomplishments and the rest of the
world
concerning all topics of biomass fuels and stoves and other
applications.
How can we correct that situation?

Quoting "Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya" <[email protected]>:
Dear all,
I would be happy to share some publications arising from the following
activities at the Asian Institute of Technology:
1. Sida funded Regional project: An information package (including
construction details) on biomass briquetting machines developed in a
number
of Asian countries and design of natural- cross-draft gasifier stoves
that
can operate continuously is available. The briquetting machines
developed
were improvements on standard screw-press heated die design.
Cross-flow
gasifier stoves were designed for different sizes; these do not need
any
blower and can operate continuously without any smoke.
2. GTZ funded project on Biocoal: We used the term "Biocoal" (rather
than
"Biochar") for charcoal produced from solid organic residues such as
agricultural residues and waste wood. The findings of the project were
reported in a book titled "Biocoal Technology and Economics" by
"Regional
Energy Resources Information Center (RERIC)" (email:[email protected]
).
The
chapters of the 495-page book were: 1. State of the art of biocoal
technology, 2. Biocoal technology: A comparison of options and
recommendations, 3. Carbonisation of sawdust briquettes, 4.
Laboratory-scale
batch carbonisation selected residues, 5. Cost and availability of
selected
residues in Thailand, 6. Characterisation of selected residues, 7.
Biocoal:
Market requirements and Opportunities in Thailand, and 8. Economics of
biocoal production in Thailand.
A few copies of the book are still available with RERIC. A number of
chapters of the book were summarised as journal articles; I will be
happy
to
share some of these with interested persons for their personal use and
research purpose.
