Dear Gas Friends Again
I have received an update on the E8500 gas analyser regarding the NDIR capabilities. If you get the NDIR option (which is $2500) it includes NRID CO2, NDIR CO and NDIR CxHy which is very unusual. The CO limit goes from 8000 ppm (the electrochemical cell) to 150,000 with the NDIR. Having seen >50,000 in an actual stove test this is good news. They report that the H2 value is detected and used to correct the electrochemical cell numbers but is not reported (!) in the outputs. How strange. H2 is a good indicator of poor combustion. The ratio of the CO and H2 values can be used to tell if the fire is entering a pyrolysis mode instead of a whole fuel combustion mode. H2 rises relative to its common 1/3 proportion of CO (which fraction depends on its % of the fuel on a molar basis) if there is biomass being heated rapidly but not burned. Regards Crispin
