Roger, our colleagues in Senegal use the sap of a baobab tree variety called LALO to impregnate the mud bricks. it does have a positive effect and is cheap. I found it in Kaolak and smaller villages around sold in little plastic bags on the market. dead cheap.we also used it for the final coating of the firing kiln from banco.
