‎Dear Alex

The burn cycle ‎was such that the gasification of the volatiles commences first and with the correct primary air it has characteristics consistent with  that.

The later fire starts to consume more char and at the end it is primarily carbon. I expect that the reason why I think it is CO and not hydrocarbons is because if it was mostly HC it would have a largely yellow or orange glow. The HC species would create a series of complex particles rapidly, one after another until it was consumed.

I think the blue is C > CO2 or CO > CO2 hence the blue photon. No particles involved, right?

Crispin,
You are most likely correct that CO is burning in the blue flame, but how can you know that other hydrocarbons are not?

This is a photo of switchgrass (pellets) burning in an ND TLUD. The blue flame is CO burning. I have a video if you are interested.
