This is the whole basis of this group - excellent discussion.

Yes the light absorption through paper may work when the soot quantity is
small otherwise there will be no light transmitted. Also once a plateau is
reached one can never tell how much soot is being collected.

Collecting soot with ice is OK as long as ice is available. The idea behind
this paper is to get the data fast and easily.
