The DOT deals in transportation not homeless shelters.
John makes a good point. I also responded to Renee offline, suggesting that its not clear that the folks are sleeping under bridges because there isn't enough homeless shelters (although that may be the case). It might be that there are other problems with the way we provide those services to the homeless.
While, the DOT is not in the business of providing services to the homeless, we should expect that State, County, and City governments are working together to achieve the most effective and efficient solution to problems.
IF (and I say IF) the reason that people are sleeping under bridges reflects a gap in the services that Ramsey County is providing - then government departments should be cooperating to solve the source of the problem and not just push the homeless people out from under the bridges to another equally problematic location.
Because we are the St. Paul Issues Forum, we should try to keep this discussion focused as much as possible on St. Paul or Ramsey County and off of a general discussion about DOT (some crossover is OK).
Can anyone update us on this list about the status of Homeless Shelters in St. Paul / Ramsey County? Do we have sufficient space in shelters to meet the needs of those seeking shelter?
