Jobs is jobs when you need something to put food on the table and a roof over our head. I would think many people would accept anything at almost any rate to be able to cover these expenses. that is why we have some many people working multiple jobs, some doing two jobs with 40 hour a week shifts.
However, there is one thing that needs to be said regarding minimum wage jobs.
There will never be a situation where the market will truly control the wage rate of low end jobs without government intervention. We already have businesses saying they will go out of business if they have to raise their employees salaries. Look at the restaurant business. There are also a number of employers who constantly complain they can't find employees to fill their openings. Yet when they are informed their pay scale is below the market they refuse to raise their wages.
Remember. with few exceptions, the economy of the area depends entirely on the wages earned by the people living in that area. If people earn only enough income to buy food and shelter, there won't be any consumers to keep businesses operating.

There aren't many jobs in St. Paul that the open minded people in this city will hire those that don't have English as a first language, the mentally ill (even if they have a Master's degree), or the disabled. And if it's a choice between $8 an hour and nothing or being homeless, I'll take the $8 an hour any day. So, unless you're on on the bottom of Mazlow's pyramid doing whatever you can to survive, I don't think you would understand. Like Paul said, jobs is jobs. Renee Jenson Como |
