As schools clammer to "clients/customers" to fill their hallways, I think that many of our assumptions about social equality and equity are going to be challenged. Tim's posting about Hope Academy - a Hmong-focused charter school - is a perfect example of this. Various community groups have been suggesting schools that cater specifically to their individual demographic. There are currently three Hmong schools that I am aware of, either in their planning or implementation stages. I would wager a guess that other immigrant communities might be interested in such programs and have spoken with several individuals wanting an all-girls program. With all the debates about neighborhood schools and the desegregation of schools and school district, how will this demographic influence our changing schools? Will this influence some of the school reform efforts we are seeing in St Paul, particularly within current or new Small Learning Communities?

Thoughts anyone?
