Post news and information from your neighborhood: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _________________________________________ The Zoning Committee of the Planning Commission took testimony on the planned CVS pharmacy proposed for the corner of Snelling and University. Many neighbors and University United and at least one community council were present at the hearing to air their complaints: no doors or windows on University, the single access door on Snelling really on the parking lot, an overly small building for the site, no adaptation to transit oriented design.
The Design Center and Jay's office had meetings with representatives of CVS representatives and they agreed to some windows along University Ave. Their original proposal was for some narrow slits at about the 10 -15 foot level. The Design Center suggested something more along the lines of something a normal person could acually see into and out of. They have to-date refused to consider a more open design, bigger building or entrance on University Ave. A University United representative was so frustrated with this huge corporation's rather complete insenitivity to the community's expectations for the development on the corner that he hissed at this writer, "We simply will not let it happen. This is unacceptable." It should be noted that no one from CVS has ever agreed to meet with the neighborhood or University United. They have sent various lawyers, etc. to represent them and often these people have brought forth incorrect information. A primary example of that was the lawyer flat out stated that the only CVS stores that were more than one story were when they remodeled existing buildings. University United has photos of several multistory, multi- purpose CVS stores which were recently built. You can see them on the UU website http://www.universityunited.com/projects.htm#cvs Below is the article from today's PP. Posted on Fri, Feb. 06, 2004 ST. PAUL: Drugstore design hits opposition BYROBERT INGRASSIA Pioneer Press A proposal for a new drugstore at University and Snelling avenues in St. Paul started wending its way through a city-approval process Thursday night, but ran smack into a wall of neighborhood opposition. CVS Corp., a drugstore chain with more than 4,200 locations nationwide, is planning to jump into the Twin Cities market with as many as 10 stores this year and up to 40 stores within five years. A design for a new structure at the northwest corner of University and Snelling avenues has been met with disdain from several community groups. Plans call for a one-story building with no entrance along University Avenue. http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/news/local/7886923.htm -- Jeanne Weigum 651-646-3005 fax 651-646-0142 _____________________________________________ NEW ADDRESS FOR LIST: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To subscribe, modify subscription, or get your password - visit: http://www.mnforum.org/mailman/listinfo/stpaul Archive Address: http://www.mnforum.org/mailman/private/stpaul/ _____________________________________________ For state and national discussions see: http://e-democracy.org/discuss.html For external forums, see: http://e-democracy.org/mninteract
