I am Erik Hare, a 15 year resident of this fair city in the fabulous West
End. I am originally from Miami where I graduated from the same High
School Jeff Bezos (of Amazon) was valedictorian one year earlier.

But here I am now. My daughter is in second grade at Expo, and my son
George may be at JJ Hill's 4 year old program next year. I am a big
believer in school choice for the simple reason that people learn in
different ways. The idea that a neighborhood school can turn out educated
kids through some kind of "best methods" analysis really bugs the Hell out
of me.

Also, like Chuck Repke, I utterly despise the mechanized schools with
their bells and crap. At every chance I have to talk to an 8-12th grader,
I urge them to foment rebellion against it, and make The Man stop treating
them like animals. So far, it hasn't gotten anywhere, but someday ...

(I'm not kidding about that, either)

So I have opinions about stuff, strong opinions that aren't all that lefty
but aren't really righty either. I'm sometimes fun at parties that way.

I do think that public education is a) worth the roughly half of all state
and local tax receipts that we put into it, and b) hopelessly squandering
the riches they have on bureacracy that actually hurts by taking power
away from teachers. I don't blame the school district for this, as it's
about the same everywhere, so I call the whole thing the "Educational
Industrial Complex". It fits with the beef about bells and so on.

I'm also prone to rambling. I'll stop now.
