Please Introduce Yourself What's your connection to St. Paul public schools? mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _________________________________________ I'm Mike Wassenaar, I work downtown at SPNN, the City's Community Television operation, and I live near West 7th and Randolph. I've live in Saint Paul since 1997. My connection to the Saint Paul schools comes from covering issues and talking to candidates, but also from SPNN's youth education programs, which help teachers with video and television curricula, lend video equipment to schools, and teach video classes and after school programs, and also from our operation of an education channel on St. Paul's cable system, Channel 16. I also have a connection to the schools through my wife Johnine Ornelas' work as an Adult English Language Learner teacher. She's working in Minneapolis now at Cedar Riverside, but for three and half years she worked with the Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning on University Avenue. She taught night classes both at Hubbs, and at Central, as well as at several outreach sites around the city, and in several workplaces where Hubbs does workplace education. I believe that many people have no clue that the school district is responsible for Adult Basic Education, or the economic impact programs such as ABE or ELL have for people's lives, or for businesses in the city. When we are talking about education in the city, almost exclusively we are concerning ourselves with the welfare of children. One of the key roles of ELL is allowing people to better their conditions, and to engage with the community as a whole.
