SAY IT AINT SO, JOE !! - Twins Continue to Squeeze the Public
"We were saddened to see the Minnesota Twins in the person of President Jerry Bell, our local representatives of one great American institution, Major League Baseball, speak out against another great American institution -- democracy." comments Phil Fuehrer, one of the organizers of "SAY IT AIN'T SO, JOE !!" a campaign to allow St. Paul voters the right to vote on any financing for a new stadium in St. Paul.
In meetings held with a number of state legislators on Wednesday - meetings that Twins representatives, no doubt, had hoped would remain private - Mr. Bell forwarded financing proposals that recommend against any opportunity for the voters of any proposed host site to vote to approve or reject the local taxes.
"With both the governor and the mayor now on board in support of a referendum on the matter, it is terribly disappointing to have the Minnesota Twins continue to support taxation without representation." said Elizabeth Dickinson a SIASJ organizer
"This is standard operating procedure for the Twins in these matters" notes Patrick Hill another SIASJ organizer. "They have regularly opposed a vote by the public in the past with one excuse or another. The truth is that they know the public has repeatedly show in previous votes and opinion polls that they oppose public funding for these purposes."
"We are set to begin collecting signatures for our petition drive to amend the St. Paul City Charter to guarantee the citizens right to be heard" said Fuehrer. "We'll be working next Tuesdays caucuses."
