I am not convinced that a comparison between corporations and the St. Paul area schools is valid. If it is, then the obvious answer is that we need quite a few more superintendents. Perhaps we need one per school. After all, the school I grew up in had different principles for elementary, middle and high school, plus a superintendent over all three. So maybe that's the answer - instead of $3 million dollars for 5, we need over $50 million for 87. That's only an extra $1100 per student. How much should it cost to teach our kids? $12,000 a year? $25,000 a year?
Do you think you're getting your money's worth?
What I've seen is a growing national hysteria about education and a great deal of money being flung at the system with a negative correlation to performance. That is, the more money gets poured in, the worse the kids are that come out. Of course, this might be because the areas we're pouring the money into are the most needy and we just haven't reached the critical mass of "enough" money yet. I think there comes a point though when it's not worth it.
How much do you think our kids' education is worth? Is it worth 20% of your salary? 50%? Is it worth a day of your work per week? Is it worth it to pour money into a system that appears to have a faulty mechanism for producing quality goods?
From my own experience in public school, I think my child would be betterserved by and large by home schooling or even not going to school at all. He might be ignorant, but at least he wouldn't be victimized. It's not like your average man on the street is all that well-informed.
