Mercury: it shouldnt be in YOUR dinner! EPA proposed Mercury rule does NOT protect public Health! Background Coal-fired power plants are the nations largest uncontrolled source of toxic mercury. Recently the Bush Administration proposed rules for reducing mercury from coal -fired power plants that gives power companies special treatment. The new rules allow 6-7 times more mercury into the air than the law permits and stalls clean up for an extra decade. Mercury threatens the health of hundreds of thousands of children each year from eating contaminated fish. The proposed rule doesnt treat mercury as the toxic that it is and therefore allows trading of this pollutant which can cause hot spots. This weak proposal does not go the extra mile to protect women and children- the most affected populations. We must urge the administration to protect women and children- it can be done! Unfortunately, the administration is only hosting 3 hearings in the US (none west of the Mississippi) on this critical public health issue. Mercury-Free Minnesota officially requested a hearing in Minnesota and the EPA refused. Community Hearing on Mercury Pollution Thats why Mercury-Free Minnesota campaign partners are hosting our own Community Hearing on Mercury Pollution. Participants can bring and submit comments in writing, online, or testify and we will have a kids action table. Federal, state and local elected officials will also be there listening and sharing their perspectives. We will submit all comments to the US EPA. Make you voice heard!
