Index of SPPS Budget Discussion http://www.e-democracy.org/stpaul/spps-posts.html _________________________________________ Dan,
I agree with you. I worked hard for Thune during his campaign for 12 months. During that time the CofC was on his tail the entire time. Dave and the other members of the council know how big of an issue this stadium thing is and what it will mean for politics for at least another 2 years. Kelly isn't going to forget about the 'trashing' of his pet project anytime soon. It will be interesting to see if Kelly still has the balls to attempt something seen as retaliation these days. It was easy when there was just Kathy and Jay. They were easy targets, but now that there are 4 people on the council that unite on issues like this one...well the Mayor has to change his tactics. The thing that I find is the great part about this council is that they actually seem to be listening to constituents (unlike our Mayor). It is a refreshing change from the last 4 years of being outright ignored by Coleman. I personally admire Dave for authoring the resolution and standing up for what he knows is the right thing to do. Bravo Dave! Sounds like they are doing their jobs or the support by the public to deny public funds was suspect." That's an easy statement to make, until you figure in that Mayor Kelly is one nasty S.O.B. He closed a fire station in Jay Benanav's ward and is not above doing other mean-spirited things to Council members who oppose him. The Chamber of Commerce threw $50,000 against Dave Thune last year in a desperate attempt to beat him and can be expected to throw similar amounts against these candidates in the future. Next there is Trade and Labor who endorsed all four of these candidates, and now will feel betrayed. They wanted the hundreds of millions of dollars in construction contracts a new stadium would bring. Lastly, not everyone is opposed to using tax dollars on new stadiums. There is a substantial minority who see nothing wrong in using our tax dollars this way. I was up at the Capital this afternoon and met two of the Council members who voted for the Resolution against Mayor Kelly's tax and they both said they are already getting hate mail. John may not think it was courageous, but when a politician bites the hand of some of their biggest supporters believe me that takes guts. Before you all light up the phone lines, Jason Lewis is working in Charlotte, NC. Soucheray isn't really for a publically funded stadium in St. Paul. I believe he is on the record for infrastructure only and no roof. I guarantee the comman man is 150% against new stadium construction with as little as 1 penny of public money. The rest of the fan is more for a vikings stadium as they know where their bread is buttered. Another question is if the issue of no public funding had overwhelming support by the people of St. Paul, why is the "no" vote by the councilmembers courageous? Sounds like they are doing their jobs or the support by the public to deny public funds was suspect. John Harris webber-camden __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
