Index of SPPS Budget Discussion http://www.e-democracy.org/stpaul/spps-posts.html _________________________________________ BRAVO to Dave Thune & Paul Skrbec for their strong and courageous work as advocates for gay and lesbian people, and our Constitution. THANK you!
Our state and national Constitution are sacred. They are and should remain fundamentally oriented toward granting rights, instead of taking rights away. The thought adding language to these documents to fundamentally remove rights is politically and legally contrary to the fundamental spirit of our Constitution and our country. The anti-gay amendment is something that should concern every elected official in Minnesota. I applaud Councilmember Thune's effort to bring some sanity to this worrisome line of reasoning. Sometimes, local governments are uniquely equipped to address the failings of the larger political environment. This may be just such a moment. If we are to live in harmony on this planet, we must learn to live in civility with people with whom we do not always agree. The ideal of liberty imbued in our Constitution is a beacon of hope for our common future. In these tumultuous times, why do we possibly want to jeopardize our shared faith in the Constitution? Should we really amend the constitution just because we disagree? Or are we trivializing the one tie that binds us all together, in all our diversity?
