"At issue is whether marriage between same-sex couples could ever be legal in Minnesota. It is not legal now. In 1997, the Legislature passed the "Defense of Marriage Act," which was signed by then-Gov. Arne Carlson. That bill specifically prohibited the state from allowing same-sex marriages, and stipulated that same-sex marriages from other states could not be legally recognized in Minnesota."
