"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." -- Thomas Jefferson, 1781

No one is injured by allowing marriage to be defined as between same-sex couples. To the contrary though, rights and privileges are restricted from same-sex couples if we define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Gay civil rights does not diminish black civil rights. It is interesting to me that many people are claiming black civil rights would be diminished by gay civil rights. The same arguments are used against black feminists when they try to call for increased awareness of the problems of single motherhood for black women and other issues particular to black culture. As if empowering black women disempowers black men. Perhaps it does. But I have to wonder what gave the black men the right to wield greater power than black women? What gives heterosexuals the right to determine the legal unions available to homosexuals?
