The following post was sent to me and I thought it contained useful
information for our e-democracy discussion. It was sent to me by
University United and I do have permission to post it to this list.

In last week' Pioneer Press and Star Tribune there are articles on two
important
issues relating to University Avenue. First, a group of business
leaders
announced the kick-off of a lobbying campaign for Light Rail
Transit in the
Central Corridor. There seems to be increasing hope for some
state bonding
money to further the planning and preliminary engineering.

The second issue is a development proposal for Lexington and
University. Steve
Wellington is asking for $1 to $2 million in TIF financing for a
retail project
consisting of a rebuilt strip mall, a McDonalds or other fast
food restaurant on
Lexington Avenue, an Aldis grocery store on University Avenue,
and other
auto-oriented businesses. A recent article about the transit
strike made the case
that incompatible land use was a major contributing factor to
the decline in transit
ridership over the last 25 years.Car-oriented development as
proposed at
Snelling, and now Lexington, will undermine the potential for
transit-oriented
development in the University Avenue Corridor.

We are looking at a once in a 100-year opportunity to transform
this corridor,
with extraordinary development opportunities at Snelling,
Lexington, Dale,
Fairview, and Raymond. So far, the brightest star is what many
would have
considered the most unlikely Dale Street - thanks to the
determined leadership
of the community and the Mayor.University UNITED will be
stepping up its
campaign in the coming weeks to promote transit-oriented
development along the
corridor, and opposing these unwelcome developments at Snelling
and
Lexington. We look forward to continuing to work with our growing
coalition of
community and business partners to make University Avenue a
spectacular urban
        corridor.
