Index of SPPS Budget Discussion http://www.e-democracy.org/stpaul/spps-posts.html _________________________________________ I was raised in Fargo, and in the fall we were treated to a few months worth of Sugar Beet plant smells that enveloped the city when the wind blew the wrong way. The beet plant was outide of town, to the north east, so the wind generally blew away.
The beet plant was a great source of jobs for the area. I worked there myself for twenty minutes back in 1968. My job was to spray nearly-boiling water into a beet masher that was about 6 feet in diameter. There was another poor sucker with the same job as me, standing directly opposite me with his own hose pointed at the beet masher. When his overspray hit my bare arms, I had had enough, and quit. I went out and got a better job, working in the sewers. (thats true!) In the past few summers, I have noticed that same familiar sickly-sweet smell around the lake Como area. I have never complained about it, and a few of my neighbors could smell it, but had no idea what it was, so probably nobody complained. I just thought people should know that the stank goes as far as Lake Como, even tho most of the residents probably think one of their neighbors are cooking a pot of cabbage or something. I know our stink does not compare to living nearby, but it IS enough to make you want to go indoors on some days. GSE does not belong in our town.
