ELECT YOUR REPS AT APRIL 15TH ANNUAL MEETING; LATIMER, MISCHKE TO SPEAK
The Macalester-Groveland Community Council Annual Meeting will take place THIS THURSDAY April 15th at 7:00 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, at Goodrich and Snelling Avenues. Two Saint Paulites of note will be featured: Villager and Avenues publisher Michael Mischke and Former St. Paul Mayor and Macalester Professor George Latimer.
WE NEED YOU TO REPRESENT YOUR COMMUNITY!
A number of positions are up for election on our Board of Directors. At the April 15th Annual meeting, we will elect members of even numbered-grids, along with two at-large residential representatives, an at-large business, and an at-large educational representative. BENEFIT SALE FOR KIDSPARK SATURDAY, APRIL 24TH - 8AM to NOON
Need a new bed frame or some toys for the kids? Check out KidsPark's multi-family sale on April 24 from 8 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of Immanuel Lutheran Church at 104 Snelling Ave. South, just south of Grand Avenue in St. Paul. Families will be selling kids clothes, bed frames and other furniture, books DVDs, housewares and more. It's a fundraiser for KidsPark, the drop-in child care program of Mac-Groveland Community Council. For more information call Mary Garcia at 651-690-5041 or Maja Beckstrom 651-645-7772.
MAC-GROVELAND HEARING ON PROPOSED ST. THOMAS EXPANSION SET FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 29TH
A community hearing on the proposed expansion of the University of St. Thomas has been set for Thursday, April 29th at 7:00pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, at Goodrich and Snelling Avenues. This hearing is designed for community members and stakeholders in the Macalester-Groveland Neighborhood to provide feedback on the proposed expansion, though all are welcome. If you are not able to attend, please contribute your comments in writing to [EMAIL PROTECTED], by fax to 651-695-4004, or by mail to MGCC, 320 S. Griggs St., St. Paul, MN 55105. A separate public hearing on the expansion was held on April for stakeholders in the Merriam Park Neighborhood.
APPLY FOR THE TEEN BATTLE OF THE BANDS!
Teen bands whose members are between the ages of 12 - 18 years old are invited to apply for the tenth annual Teen Battle of the Bands. Six bands will be selected for the opportunity to play for a wandering audience of 250,000 people during Grand Old Day, June 6, 2004 from noon to 5 pm. The Grand Prize winning band will be awarded an 8-hour recording session, second place will win a $150 gift certificate to Music-Go-Round in Highland, and the third place wins a $75 gift certificate to Willie's American Guitars. Participation prizes are provided by Cadenza Music. Interested bands should call Megan Simmons, Youth Initiative Coordinator, at 651-695-4000 for a registration form. Bands are required to send in a $40 registration fee and a demo tape or CD by Wednesday, May 12, 2004.
BLOCK PARTY PLANNING WORKSHOP
Have you thought a block party on your block would be fun but have no idea how to organize it? Or have you been planning block parties for years and want to do something different? The Macalester-Groveland Community Council, Highland District Council and Summit Hill Association are hosting a block party planning workshop on Monday, April 19, 2004 at 7 p.m. at Hillcrest Recreation Center (1978 Ford Parkway). This meeting will be a great way to gather tips about organizing the party, planning fun activities and completing city permits. To reserve a spot, please call Megan Simmons, Crime Prevention Coordinator, at 651-695-4000.
HOME IMPROVEMENT FAIR APRIL 24TH: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Imagine what you can do at home, in the garden by remodeling or decorating your property. Stop dreaming and start learning! Come to the FREE 12th annual Highland/Macalester-Groveland Home Improvement Fair on Saturday, April 24, 2004, 10 am - 3 pm. Again the Fair is held in the caf� at Cretin-Derham High School on 550 South Albert Street, St. Paul, 55116. Fun, informal workshops are offered at 10:30 a.m., 12 noon, and 1:30 p.m. Topics will include kitchen remodeling; choosing a contractor; indoor air quality; decorative wall treatments; effective ways to lower your energy bills; and more. Stay for the day. Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the day from the Holy Spirit Men's Club. Volunteers are needed for this event. UPCOMING MEETINGS THIS MONTH
In addition to a number of major meetings this month, we will continue to have our regularly scheduled meetings. The KidsPark Parent Advisory Committee (KPAC) meets at 6:30pm on April 19th at KidsPark, 1961 Saint Clair Avenue. The Housing and Land Use Committee meets Wednesday April 21st at 7pm at the Edgcumbe Recreation Center; they will be discussing a zoning variance at 1643 Berkley, and a "growler" alcohol license for Green Mill. The Environment Committee meets Thursday, April 22nd at 7pm at the Edgcumbe Recreation Center. And finally, the Transportation Committee is meeting on April 26th at the Hillcrest Recreation Center, 1978 Ford Parkway, where committee members will hear about St. Paul Bicycle plans and begin collaborative cross-council work on a traffic-calming sign campaign.
