I would like to acknowledge that Tim attneded and spoke to the Macalester Groveland Community Council this night.

Thank you Brian! Thanks for giving me a few minutes to talk about E-Democracy.

I'd just like to say a thing or two about about what I saw at the Mac Groveland annual meeting last night. I suppose that the most important business item of the evening, was the election of board members.

Mac Groveland, like many district councils is broken up into grids - to make sure that all parts of the district are represented and that the board is not dominated by just a small group of neighbors. Every district councils goes about the election of board members in a slightly different manner (or so I understand).

Mac Groveland broke the meeting up into subcaucuses, where residents of each grid could decide on who would represent them on the board. This can theoretically, result in elections - however, I suspect that each caucus tried to get someone willing to take the position and were happy if just one person volunteered. NOTE: candidates for the board did not need to apply in advance (although it was encouraged).

At the end of the evening, I noticed that several board positions remained unfilled. This must be frustrating for district council organizers and is truly unfortunate.

I'd like to see more discussion here in this forum and elsewhere about how to increase participation in district councils and how to fill vacant board positions all across the city. I believe that there are vacant board positions in my own district and many others.

In a separate post, I'm planning on addressing this issue in a more personal way.

Best wishes,

Tim Erickson
