If Seattle can pass a resolution, can we?
If we are going to call for the city council to pass resolutions, it would be helpful to provide a little more background info.
The article that Jennifer provides suggests in the headline that proposed federal legislation would ENCOURAGE local law enforcement agencies to enforce civil immigration laws. The article states that the law would REQUIRE such enforcement.
Which is it?
It is my understanding that current St. Paul Police Department policy states that officers will not enforce immigration laws unless they pertain to another investigation.
It is also my understanding that Mayor Kelley supported a resolution that would endorse that position.
Was this resolution (or was it an ordinance) ever passed?
(This issue came up in the Mayor's forum on Hispanic issues, several months ago, and he addressed the issue a week later on MPR).
And if this resolution was passed, why do we need another resolution?
I'm not against resolutions, but I do think that we need a better rationale for investing the time and resources in passing one, than simply the fact that other cities are doing it.
Best wishes,
