I agree with everything Andy said in his post. As an ex-smoker, I avoid
everywhere that exposes me to smoke. Smokers will never realize how badly
they stink, even fifteen minutes after they come inside from their last
butt. I even avoid talking to some neighbors because they will always
light up a cigarette in the middle of a chat on the lawn.

I don't do this because I hate smokers, or because I feel better than
them, or because of some general idea that it is bad for my health. I do
it because exposure to smoke almost instantly brings on a slight headache
that becomes throbbing after about twenty minutes.

When I visit family in California, we go out for beers and listen to music
in bars, because the bars have clean air. We can spend money and have a
good time. Here, we can't do that. We don't get to hear all the great
local musicians. I especially miss listening to small jazz and blues
bands that I used to enjoy as a smoker.

I would welcome a smoking ban everywhere in Saint Paul, in bars, parks,
sidewalks, offices lobbies etc. Let them smoke at home, indoors, or not
at all.

Maybe the "dreaded trial lawyers" can find an opportunity here to sue bar
owners when a non-smoking person leaves a bar and shortly after dies of a
heart attack. With what we know about second hand smoking as an
immediate cause of heart attacks, I would be very concerned it I owned a
bar, or if I insured a bar. I predict (and hope) that the lawsuits will
become common within the next two years.
