Many communities have put forward resolutions condemning some of the US government's actions in the war on terror. Resolutions have stated that people in the community intend to refuse to enforce all or certain provisions of the Patriot Act or the DOMA. I am appalled at the recent events in the US, regarding the overall conduct of the Department of Justice in the war on terror, the reaction to the prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, and the continuing abuse of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.
Historically these sorts of atrocities have happened time after time - some worse, some better. The worst cases happen when people deny that wrongdoing is occurring or when they pretend the victims deserve it. (As if anyone "deserves" to be sodomized with a chemical light, terrorist or no.) I do not want St. Paul to deny what's happening. I don't want this city to condone evil by indifference or inaction. If all we can do is speak out with disapproval, then I would like to see that done.
What has to happen to get some resolution like this passed?
