West Side, St. Paul The Environment Committee of the West Side
Citizens Organization (WSCO), in conjunction with Humboldt High School
Public Achievement students and Neighborhood Energy Consortium, will hold a
free energy conservation workshop at Humboldt High School on Saturday, May
15, 2004, from 10am 12pm.

The workshop will promote practical ways to use energy efficiently to
save money and help the environment. Phil Smith from the Minnesota Commerce
Department Energy Information Center, Terry Kemp from St. Paul Neighborhood
Energy Consortium, Jeff Buss from Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and
Jon Kerr of the Sunny Side Project will give presentations on energy use at
the workshop. Elizabeth Dickinson, Chair of the WSCO Environment Committee,
will facilitate

Workshop attendees will learn simple tips to significantly lower their
overall energy use and save hundreds of dollars in electric, heating and
cooling costs. They will learn about existing solar power installations on
the West Side and fuel-efficient, less polluting transportation, such as
gas-electric hybrid cars. The first 80 West Siders attending the workshop
will receive free compact fluorescent light bulbs.

If each household uses just one ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent
light bulb, we will save enough electricity to light more than 34 million
homes for one year, said Phil Smith. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use
75% less energy and last 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.
That adds up to a saving of $28 over the life of the bulb.

The Environment Committee of WSCO promotes environmental awareness and
responsibility on the West Side and responds to related community issues and
concerns. The Environment Committee works on a wide range of environmental
issues from leading a campaign to improve the High Bridge Power Plant to
removing invasive species of non-native plants from the West Side.
