Thanks for asking, Tim.
The Summit Avenue Residential Preservation Association ("SARPA") was organized in 1986 at the direction of Mayor George Latimer and the St. Paul City Council. SARPA's mission is to preserve the historic, residential, urban park character of Summit Avenue through advocacy, communication and community building. Activities in the past year included beautification projects (floral gardens and planters along Summit Avenue), a donation to the James J. Hill House to help keep it open to the public, a summer garden stroll fund-raising event, and involvement with the University of St. Thomas master plan for campus expansion and development. This has been a very busy year for us!
Despite the responsibilities we have, SARPA receives no public monies, unlike other neighborhood community councils. Thus, fund raising is a necessary part of our activities. But - we try to have those activities be fun for the participants.
Our membership includes not only persons residing on Summit Avenue, but also persons who care about preserving the historic, residential quality of our neighborhoods. If anyone wants to join in this endeavor, please contact me!

The name pretty much describers the purpose of SARPA, but I'm curious about what kinds of activities that SARPA does.

Are they primarily an "awareness" organization or are they directly involved in "preservation" projects?

I'm only asking, because there are some many different organizations in our city working on so many different civic projects, that its hard to keep up with them. When I hear about one that I'm not familiar with, I just have to ask....

Thanks,
