I'd heard there was a policy years ago to evacuate Hmong, who had been our allies in Vietnam and were then facing persecution, to a safe refuge in the US. And that for whatever military reason, the Twin Cities just happened to be where the planes stopped, the Hmong were unloaded and given orientation. So they ended up here. Oklahoma City has a similar story for some other ethnic group, those being shipped into Tinker Air Force base and then settling in OkC.

I'm thinking that maybe whatever led the Hmong to be here then caused the Twin Cities to develop better resources than most cities for dealing with refugees, which meant that future refugees tended to get directed here rather than other places. Plus the added factor of some already having family here, or at least a community.

I was just curious if anyone could confirm this stuff that I'd heard. I know there's a healthy Nigerian immigrant community and they certainly didn't come because there were Hmong relatives already here! I'm really interested in the forces that direct people to settle where they do.

The top five states with Hmong refugees are, in order, California,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Michigan. Given that they will go
to sponsoring families, one would expect that the majority of Hmong refugees
will go to these states.

These refugees - do they go to all major US cities equally, or is there something about the Twin Cities that brings them here? (better benefits, charity organizations, presence of family members already here, military policy or some other resettlement policy, etc.?)

Just curious.
