The old Shaw lumber company on Como, just West of Rice street is now home
to 100's of small enterprises and is a fascinating place to visit. I've
been there a couple of times. I'm interested in seeing how it changes
from week-to-week. I think this place ( I don't know if it has a name yet
) may be the seed of a major Oriental/Multicultural marketplace in Saint
Paul in the not-so-distant future.

The first weekend I went, the place seemed very chaotic. A bunch of
booths selling CD's, DVD's and Videos seemed to be trying to outdo each
other with the volume. A distinctly unpleasant experience.

Last weekend, all the volumes were lower. Better, but still too high in
my opinion. There were also a couple of rent-a-cops on location. You can
buy things from tacky jewelry and garden plants to mysterious dried animal
parts at the booths.

People are busy turning card tables into sturdier displays, building
better shops and better shelters. We have the seeds of something that
could be a unique addition to St Paul in the coming years. It would be
nice if there were more cultures represented at the market.

I encourage people to go to this place, and see it at its beginning. It
may be a new and unique feature of St Paul.
