    Job Shadowing, Internships, and Mentoring
           In St. Paul High Schools

         Online Discussion: May 17 - 21

Q: What is job shadowing?
--------------------------------------------

A: It is an opportunity for a high school student(s) to visit a work site for a time period usually no more than one day to "shadow" an employee in an occupation of interest to the student. The goal of a job shadowing experience is to help the student learn first hand the "broad strokes" of the occupation he/she has selected. Some students continue to explore a career following a job shadowing experience. Other students learn that a particular occupation "is not for them." Both experiences are considered positive because the student has learned something valuable for their career development.

Q: What is an internship?
--------------------------------------------

A: An internship provides a high school student a chance to explore a career or occupation in a deeper manner and gain work skills or experience.

Internships can last for a week or longer. The time is negotiated between the student and the experience provider. Community members providing students with internships are reminded that they are serving as teachers and should view an internship as an inexpensive source of labor.

Q: What kind of mentoring do students need?
--------------------------------------------

A: Many students are still developing the skills to research job shadowing or internship experiences, identify contacts, and make the necessary call to schedule the date. Community members who volunteer as mentors provide assistance, and in some cases, prod hesitant students to "do it."

Q: What do students say about job shadowing
    experiences?
--------------------------------------------

A: "I learned a bit more about law enforcement."
A: "I learned that education is very important."
A: "It was a lifetime experience."

Q: Why should my organization get involved?
--------------------------------------------

A: Saint Paul students will be the future workers and citizens of the East Metro region. These opportunities will assist students in learning about careers and employment opportunities. It will also help them understand how to better prepare themselves for their future. Your organization will benefit from a better-prepared workforce in the future.

Q: What opportunities exist for community
members to support students?
------------------------------------------ A: Community members (including businesses, corporations, non-profits, government agencies and other organizations or individuals working with their employers' approval) can offer job-shadowing opportunities to individual students or groups of students. They can offer internships to individual students. Finally, they can offer to mentor a student who needs adult supervision and assistance in setting up a job shadowing or internship experience.

Q: What St. Paul high schools are
    participating in this partnership?
--------------------------------------------

A: Six St. Paul public high schools are participating in the online discussion:

   -- Harding High School
   -- Johnson High School
   -- Arlington High School
   -- Humboldt High School
   -- Como Park High School
   -- Highland Park High School

The contact information for each school is accessible through the online event's web site. Central High School is evaluating the project and may join at a future date.

Q: Specifically, what kind of input or
support are our area high schools looking for?
--------------------------------------------

A: High schools are looking for information in the following areas:

* Ideas about how to make job shadowing or internship experiences work in your specific business, industry, or workplace.
* Individuals working in larger businesses or corporations willing to help facilitate an institutional relationship between their employer and a local high school.
* Feedback on the concerns that your business might have about hosting a job shadow or intern, so that schools might try to address those issues.
* Ideas about how to recruit sufficient businesses and workplaces to host the increasing number of students what will be looking for opportunities in the years to come.
