Tell Us About Your Real World
            Job Shadow or Internship
                   Experiences

Here is a concrete example of what is happening at St. Paul Central. Can anyone share some more examples of what is happening at our other high schools (Public, Private, or Charter).

Tell us about your own (or your schools) job shadow or internship experiences.

------------------ Marisha Chamberlain

In ten years of partnership between Ceridian Corporation and St. Paul Central, we've included job shadowing every single year. To date, more than 450 Central High students and 13 teachers have engaged in job shadowing at Central and 42 Ceridian employees have shadowed students, faculty and staff at Central, including four Ceridian executives who have shadowed Principal Mary Mackbee, as "Principals for a Day". We think of it as a conversation, a chance to learn from one another. Orientation has proved key. Both students and the volunteers they are paired with can feel unsure and shy at the beginning of the day, but by the end of the day pleased and proud of themselves for venturing into job shadowing. One way to organize job shadowing is to have a large group of students travel offsite for a daylong experience. A structured way to begin dialogue -- such as interview questions each side has prepared -- can be a help. We like to bring in as guest speakers, students who once job shadowed and have graduated from high school and gone on to interesting careers.

Challenges:

How to successfully recruit on both sides
How to make the most of the time allotted
How to break through shyness to dialogue
How to make certain that the job shadowing experience
is a hands-on experience of an actual workday

We're working on a handbook. You'll hear more from us!
