The Wal-Mart rally was very well-attended tonight--several hundred people
from all walks of life. It was great that most of the speakers were
women---a small business owner, a minister, a neighborhood activist, and
Senator Ellen Anderson all spoke very well about the inequities of Wal-Mart.
Rep. Sheldon Johnson and Councilmember Jay Benanav were there, too.

Wal-Mart is the most sued corporation in America--it's been sued for
racketeering, mail and wire fraud, denying social security benefits, denying
immigrant janitors their wages, locking in employees overnight, and
violations of child labor laws. (If you'd like me to share the articles
from the NY Times chronicling these and other abuses, just let me know).

At the end, the protesters entered Wal-Mart, chanting "Share the
Wealth"--but security kept anyone with a camera outside the store. It
didn't seem like very many of the major media outlets were there at all.

The activists are simply asking for a meeting to press Wal-Mart to enforce
existing labor laws and pay a livable wage.
