I realize that people have lives other than contesting UST (thank God), but,
on the 27th, at the Zoning committee, we need a room full of angry people or
we will wind up with the same result we got last night. Now is the time for
people to show their anger, their frustration with agencies of government
and with a flawed and prejudiced process. Or we will lose in committees,
councils and courts. Bring your friends, your children, their children, your
neighbors, people who owe you favors, debtors, whoever who can show that
they care. We need to show the flag and make government responsive. jim

SARPA was ably represented by Helen Murphy, Elaine Yorkgitis , Ken Nimmer
and me.
We made a number of points, we had the Board silently pausing at times,
although it was clearly wired, many of the HPC members having been called in
by the Mayor personally and told that their tenure on HPC was related to
their vote on this issue. So in two votes, one to demolish Christ Child, and
one to build the 58 foot, 75,000 sq.ft. building, we lost.
I congratulated Doug Hennes and John Albers on their win, promising them it
wasn't over by a long shot. jim

Subject: [NeighborsUnited] Important Meeting - Please Attend

We urge you to attend the Heritage Preservation Commission meeting tomorrow
night, Thursday, May 20, at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall, Lower Level, Room
40, 15 West Kellogg Boulevard, St. Paul.

As you know, the University of St. Thomas has three principle hurdles before
proceeding with its plans. First, the issue of whether an Environmental
Impact Study/Statement is mandated must be settled. This is currently
pending in court. Second, UST must get approval from the Heritage
Preservation Commission to raze the buildings and homes on Summit Avenue.
Third, UST must get approval from the City to expand its campus boundaries
to include the Summit and Grand Avenues included in their expansion plans.
Each step has different issues, and each must play out as prescribed.

We are now involved in the second step, which is in front of the Heritage
Preservation Commission. The Heritage Preservation Commission will meet
this Thursday, May 20, at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall, Lower Level, Room 40,
15 West Kellogg Boulevard, St. Paul. This is a public meeting and your
comments will be welcomed. We need you to voice your concerns. Please try
to attend. We appreciate it, as will your neighbors!

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know.
