Some opportunism on my part :-)

According to Doug Grow column on Senator Day's comments about public schools:
http://www.startribune.com/stories/465/4789758.html

"Terribly mismanaged," Day said of the two city districts. "What's happening is that nobody's looking at the real causes of what's going on in those districts. What we need to have are mentoring programs, where two or three kids, maybe five or six, work with an adult and maybe go out for a hamburger once in awhile. A loving person doesn't have to be a parent."

While, the tone of Senator's Day's comments aren't very helpful - he does address one point of interest to me - the idea of providing mentors for students.

One of the less visible components of the job shadow discussion that we've been hosting all week, is the mentoring component. In addition to job shadows and internships several St. Paul highs schools are attempting to provide more mentoring opportunities for students.

Our online discussion this week is intended to find better ways of providing, not only job shadow and internship opportunities, but also mentoring relationships for students. This is not something that the school district can do on its own, broad community input and support is necessary.

If you have comments or questions about:

  1) How we can better find and organize mentors
to support all our high school students?

  2) What it takes to become a mentor to a St. Paul
     high school student?

  3) What it would take to get your business or
employer to sign up as a mentoring (or job
     shadow) partner.

Please, post them here or on our St. Paul Job Shadow site.
