Just food-for-thought. . . there was (IMHO) an excellent article in a recent "American Educator" called, "It's Time to Tell the Kids: If You Don't Do Well in High School, You Won't Do Well in College (or on the Job)" that talks about some of the problems students have when entering and trying to succeed in college. One of the premises the article is based on is the belief that many students know they can get into college (all post-secondary institutions included in that) with lackluster transcripts and therefore "blow off" high school. As a result, high school for some is deemed a hoop to jump through and otherwise meaningless.

This article (to be fair, published in the AFT professional magazine) is something that I think that every parent should read. If anyone would like a copy of it, it can be found at: http://www.aft.org/american_educator/index.html

This again raises the question of what is the purpose of public education. I personally believe that we should be preparing all students for college, regardless of their intentions to go. I do, however, fully understand the obstacles in the way of doing this, in light of the varied skills and abilities of the children in any school, let alone an urban school.
