---- My Shadowing Experience

By Jon

Hello -

My name is Jon, and I shadowed Roger Barr for the last 2 days, May 26 and 27. If you would like to know the details of what happened, feel free to check out Roger's post, which is entitled "Anatomy of a job shadow experience, the provider's perspective." I am here to comment on how the two days went, what I learned from the experience and other details like that.
As Roger said, I am a senior at Mounds Park Academy, and everyone in my class is required to shadow someone over the period of 2 days to get a feel for the real world after school.
As I arrived the first day, Roger and I had a conversation about general things, ranging from how I chose to shadow someone in a nonprofit education organization to what subjects I like in school. I told him that we could specify any job or person we would like to shadow, but I did not do so, so the people running the shadowing at my school just gave me whatever they felt was best. I then went on to tell him my favorite subjects were math and science, because of the fact that they had concrete answers rather than being abstract. I guess you could say I struggle with writing papers, as well as anything that has to do with art. I feel very comfortable when something I do has definite answers, I like to know what to do and what's going on at all times.
The first day gave me an opportunity to glance into the abstract working world and it was indeed a great learning tool. Although it confirmed my thoughts that this kind of work was not for me, it was very interesting and was well worth it because I learned something about myself and what kind of job was not for me.
The second day, today, was a slightly shorter day and I realized just how busy one's day could be out in the workplace. Roger was on the phone or typing most of the time, trying to arrange a few different things. Although this seemed to be a little more concrete, Roger had to use his well-developed people skills to try to arrange those things just in time for them to happen.
Overall, I had a very good time during this shadowing experience. It helped me learn a lot about not only myself, but about what kind of work I will look to do in the future. Going into this experience, I hadn't really thought about concrete and abstract, but our conversation about what subjects I like in school made me realize that I do indeed like concrete subjects and answers. Being out in the workplace in an abstract job confirmed my thoughts, and I learned a lot of valuable things from this. Thank you to Roger for letting me shadow you, it was very helpful and I had a good time.
Jon
