The most recent issue of the Midway/Como Monitor has a story by Jane McClure about attempts by local district councils - Merriam Park & Hamline Midway - to close a new business on University Ave, called the "Love Doctor." Its a novelty gift store that sells "adult" items.

This store joins another store "Fantasy Gifts" which opened earlier this year a few blocks away. FYI - "Fantasy Gifts" is only about 4 blocks from my house.

Apparently, there are concerns by some residents that the University and Snelling area might become an "adult" business district and face the associated problems of prostitution and other illegal activities.

One interesting paragraph in the article, with city wide implications, reads:

"Concerns about the spread of such businesses
have prompted action by the St. Paul City Council,
which was to vote July 7 on a year-long moratorium
on any new adult businesses. Benanav introduced the
moratoriam this spring for his Forth Ward only, but
other City Council members quickly amended the
ordinance to make the ban citywide."

Apparently, the city has a spotty record in terms of controlling Adult businesses.

Are Adult businesses a problem in other neighborhoods?

Does anyone know if the city council took action on this issue earlier this week?
