I want to express my condolences to Julittas family for the loss of their
loved one. I feel very reluctant to bring up anyones death as part of
this smoking debate, but it is in fact Life and Death that we are talking
about in this issue.

When I saw this, I wondered if her exposure to second hand smoke in bars
may have had something to do with it. I don't know if she smoked, or if
she played in bars, but that is how most musicians make a living. Except
for classical musicians, it would be hard to see how a professional
musician could earn a living without absorbing the toxins in local bars.

Does anyone know if Julitta played regularly in any metro area bars?

Owners of Bars must be having the same kinds of thoughts when they read
stories like this, only they are hoping they don't get sued, while I am
hoping they do.

.."Julitta McFarlane, a singer with a silky alto who joined her family's
reggae band Ipso Facto after high school, died Tuesday after her third
heart attack in 10 years. She was 38."..
.."She was back at Ipso Facto's microphone in 1987 when she won the
Minnesota Music Award for best female vocals in world-beat music.
.."By 1992, she left the family band to sing with her own band, Ethical
Treatment, Wain McFarlane said.

In another strib piece:

Pete Quinn, who took Cafe Latte smoke free almost 19 years ago, says in an
article today:
His concern "is not customers but workers. Another group of employees
surrounded by secondhand smoke -- airline flight attendants -- won a $300
million settlement from the tobacco industry in 1997, although tobacco
companies did not concede any danger in secondhand smoke.

"It's really about workers' safety. That's the point," Quinn said. "It's
not just aesthetics, smoky clothes and smoky hair. It's serious business."
