Every time an election comes up, citizens decide who to support. We make those decisions based on how people vote on issues that affect us and our vision of how to improve our civilization. The reason I personally feel strongly about this one is that it affects my quality of life EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I do fully understand, however, why smokers think the demand for clean air is petty and extreme, because I used to be a smoker. 1 Smoking is a SERIOUS addiction. When addicts think about their addiction they do not and cannot think rationally. As a smoker, I couldn't count the number of days that I told myself "I'll quit tomorrow" because the most important thing to my befuddled brain was to be able to smoke TODAY, RIGHT NOW!. When smokers argue for 'reasonable and practical' solutions, it is their addiction and fear doing the thinking for them. 2. Smokers can't smell anything, especially smoke and other smokers. About a month after I finally succceeded in quitting smoking, my sense of smell came back. I remember coming up behind someone in line at a 7-11 and noticing that the person stank so badly I thought they'd been rolling in dead fish. I didn't realize at first it was just the way a normal smoker smells. 3. Smokers bodies are in a constant state of being partially poisoned. They can't imagine how it feels to a non-smoker to have to spend half an hour in a smoky atmosphere and then suffer from a headache the rest of the day. I voted for Kelly myself. I am ashamed to say I even voted for C(gag/hack/cough/spit)oleman (flip-flopper, ex-hippie, draft-dodger, absentee parent) for Mayor TWICE! I won't vote against Kelly just because of the smoking issue, but I will remember what he does. As for the issue of getting involved in elections in other peoples wards/counties and states, that train left the station years ago. The tobacco industry, the NRA and the Chamber of Commerce wander all over the country poking their noses into every local isue that affects them. It is time we fight back on every level.
