As another person who used the net back when it was usenet, I have to disagree with Arno. "Back in the day", bandwidth was meaningful. I had a 300 baud modem connected to an Apple IIe and could read the text faster than it scrolled across the screen. Back then, getting garbage was a time waster. Now, it is merly an annoyance. The spread of the internet has made it accessible to people who don't know how to set up filters. That is a good thing, and while an occasional Vacation message is an annoyance, I really welcome all the people who don't know how to do all the cool things that some of us know how to do.
As I understand it, Tim doesn't directly control the software, but I think the list manager software probably has a filter that could moderate Vacation and Out of Office replies. If the person turning on his Vacation reply has the option of telling it not to reply to email lists, maybe someone who knows how to do so can write out instructions they can follow. I think they would like to know. Arnos point about "come rob my house" is a good one though, and people should be careful announcing to hundreds of people when they won't be home. Arno A.
